Homo Sapiens

Ancestral beachcombers
Fed themselves with seafood
And discover they’re now human
As they nourished the brain
With fatty acids,
Adding dexterity
To build an altar,
Or consigned the shell to the midden
Where centuries later we stand
Trying to replicate with brush and paint
What should find its way to the refuse bin,
But instead, messy as it is,
Place it on the altar of the heart
Knowing it will be accepted there.
